Episode 6 - Marshal Brune - general, revolutionary, patriot, looter

Marshal Guillaume Brune was one of the most complex and misunderstood figures of the Napoleonic Wars. A veteran of the French Revolutionary Wars and a close ally of Napoleon in the early years, Brune rose from humble origins to become a Marshal of France in 1804.

Brune distinguished himself in Italy, Switzerland, and the Netherlands, playing a key role in securing French dominance during the Revolutionary period. He commanded the Army of the Batavian Republic, defeated Anglo-Russian forces, and helped export revolutionary France’s influence across Europe. Yet despite his early success, Brune’s career never reached the heights of Marshals like Davout, Ney, or Lannes.

Known for his blunt personality, republican ideals, looting, and uneasy relationship with the Imperial court, Brune often clashed with Napoleon’s inner circle. His political views made him an outsider among the Marshals.

After Napoleon’s fall, Brune met a tragic and violent end during the White Terror of 1815, murdered by royalist mobs while attempting to return home. His death remains one of the darkest episodes involving a Marshal of France.
