Training with White Belts

Training with white belts: throw them into the deep end or let them splash around in the wading pool?

Every gym is a little different when it comes to initiating, orienting and training beginners. I think there's a responsibility on a personal level and I take it upon myself to play by some basic rules. Here is my personal checklist for training with white belts and bringing them into the fold, so to speak:

  1. Ask if they’d like to train
  2. Shake their hand and introduce yourself
  3. Ask them how long they’ve been training
  4. Give them an idea of something to focus on
  5. Play nice
  6. Thank them for training
  7. Give encouragement
  8. Invite them back
