Today’s question comes from Yvonne Zohar part 1 of 2 Today’s questions: Question 1 - I often go to Crete (we are developing a hospitality project there) where I talk with winemakers and archaeologists. As you know Cretans/ Minoans were the seafarers of the ancient world, trading pottery and wine for materials they needed, such as metals. In Greece they date the contacts between Italy much earlier than your research shows. How do you explain the difference? Italian: Vado spesso a Creta (stiamo sviluppando un progetto di ospitalità lì) dove parlo con produttori di vino e archeologi. Come sapete, i cretesi/minoici erano i navigatori del mondo antico e scambiavano ceramiche e vino con i materiali di cui avevano bisogno, come i metalli. In Grecia i contatti con l'Italia sono datati molto prima di quanto non risulti dalle vostre ricerche. Come spiega questa differenza? Question 2 - On the north of Greece, in the Pangeon mountains, an unidentified red variety was discovered. After years of research and DNA testing, it turned out to be an old Greek variety, non-identical to any greek or foreign grape. After Enology studies at Bologna university, Vittorio holds the technical responsibility (vineyard and cellar) of the estate. Great friends/teachers have helped him in his path of prfessional growth, from Attilio Sceinza to Donato Lanati, from Vittorio Fiore to Nicola Tucci. He approached in organic agriculture since 2011 when it was not so popular in northern Italy. A very important step has been in 2013, when the first georgian amphora (Kvèvri) arrived in the winery and Vittorio started to apply long skin macerations to albana mosts (at the beginning almost as a joke, and now also as a real business). The maceration of the indigenous white variety of the Romagna region is now his great passion. Vittorio loves white wines. More about today’s guest: Sara D'Ambra is the 4th generation of Casa D'Ambra with her sister Marina. Casa D'Ambra was born in 1888 with Francesco D'Ambra, who bought the local wine to ship it to Naples North Italy and France. In 1956 thanks to Salvatore D'Ambra Casa D'Ambra started the wine production with Biancolella, Forastera, Per''e palummo, the 3 main indigenous varietis. So, the second generation consisted of 3 people: Mario the seller, Michele the one involved in the vineyard to buy grapes and Salvatore the winemaker. Another important step was March 1966 when they created the DOC Ischia Bianco and Ischia Rosso. These 2 DOC were between the first in Italy. That time the winery made around 1.500.000 bottles per year. Casa D'Ambra also exported the wines tom USA. Salvatore D'Ambra was also in the wine research in Verona. The 3rd genaration of the winery is now represented by Andrea D'Ambra, the wine maker of the winery, who produce 500.000 bottles per year. Casa D'Ambra every year recovers vineyard to save it from the abandonment. Casa D'Ambra just bought 7ectares, where it is creating a wine resort and winespa. Sara D'Ambra is a winemaker , she worked in different part of the world as assistent winemaker and cellar hand. At Casa D'Ambra she manage the hospitality and Tenuta Calitto.
