1102: College vs. Trades | Skeptical Sunday

Want to make bank without the bank breaking you? Anglo-Saxon poetry enthusiast Nick Pell weighs trades against degrees on this week's Skeptical Sunday!

On This Week's Skeptical Sunday, We Discuss:
  • While college graduates earn more on average ($77,000/year) compared to trade school graduates ($67,000/year) and high school graduates ($47,000/year), this comes with significant student loan debt — averaging $37,000 for a bachelor's degree.
  • There's a severe shortage of skilled trade workers in America, with examples like a deficit of 500,000 plumbers and an anticipated shortage of 1.9 million manufacturing jobs, suggesting strong job security and demand in these fields.
  • Advanced degrees show diminishing returns — a master's degree costs an average of $65,000 and only provides about a 16% salary increase, while a doctorate costs $127,000 for grad school alone with relatively modest income gains.
  • The college versus trade school decision isn't purely financial — it should factor in personal aptitudes, desired lifestyle, and how someone wants to spend roughly one-third of their adult life working.
  • There are multiple paths to success, and you can make informed choices by: taking a "gap year" to work and explore interests, completing general education requirements at more affordable community colleges, researching program costs versus expected salaries, and considering apprenticeships which have doubled since 2013 and offer paid training opportunities.

633: Finding Work Fast with a Criminal Past | Feedback Friday

Getting your record expunged after the embarrassment of earning a DUI can take years, but you need to land a job today. So how do you find work fast when you have a criminal past? We'll try to find an answer to this and more here on Feedback Friday! And in case you didn't already know it, Jordan Harbinger (@JordanHarbinger) and Gabriel Mizrahi (@GabeMizrahi) banter and take your comments and questions for Feedback Friday right here every week! Now let's dive in! Full show notes and resources can be found here: jordanharbinger.com/633 On This Week's Feedback Friday, We Discuss: Getting your record expunged after the embarrassment of earning a DUI can take years, but you need to land a job today. So how do you find work fast when you have a criminal past?  [Thanks to attorney Corbin Payne for helping us field this one!] Despite working in tech -- arguably the most optimistic field there is -- you find yourself battling a constant wave of hopelessness over the escalating climate crisis and the future of the planet. What can you do to keep your eco-anxiety in check? When confronting your fiancée with text messages suggesting she's been cheating on you with a co-worker, she insists it never got physical and she wants to reconcile. But can you ever trust her enough to carry on with the wedding you've been planning? As an experienced world traveler on a gap year before college, you've researched places you want to visit that your very concerned parents have "forbid" you to consider -- like Iran, Turkmenistan, Iraqi Kurdistan, Lebanon, and Russia. You believe the benefits of seeing these destinations up close outweigh the risks and are determined to go, but how can you alleviate your parents' worry and depart with their blessing? As a third-year medical student, you'll be graded on your performance under pressure working full time in a hospital. The problem? You're a very feminine female with a petite build and a soft voice, and getting peers and patients to take you seriously has been an issue. How can you thrive in a field where masculinity is deemed equal to competency? Have any questions, comments, or stories you'd like to share with us? Drop us a line at friday@jordanharbinger.com! 632: Jon Acuff | Give Yourself the Gift of Done

Jon Acuff (@jonacuff) is the New York Times bestselling author of seven books, including his Wall Street Journal #1 bestseller, Finish: Give Yourself the Gift of Done. [Note: This is a previously broadcast episode from the vault that we felt deserved a fresh pass through your earholes!] What We Discuss with Jon Acuff: Why are only eight percent of new year’s resolutions realized? (Incidentally, that’s the same percentage of applicants accepted to Juilliard.) The harm perfectionism causes and what we can do to navigate through it. The Planning Fallacy and how it causes overachievers to fail before even beginning. Strategic Incompetence: why you should deliberately be terrible at some things. Secret Rules: what they are, how they’re made, and how these invisible scripts affect our lives (and what we can do about it). And much more... 631: Amanda Catarzi | Overcoming Cult Life and Sex Trafficking

631: Amanda Catarzi | Overcoming Cult Life and Sex Trafficking

Amanda Catarzi survived a cult-dominated childhood and abuse at the hands of sex and labor traffickers. In the years since, she has helped law enforcement bust trafficking rings, written federal anti-trafficking legislation, and worked to save countless victims. What We Discuss with Amanda Catarzi: 70 percent of human trafficking victims are women, and 30 percent are men. They usually die (overdose or violence being primary causes) within seven years. How Amanda's upbringing in an isolated cult that matched teen brides with middle-aged men and preached absolute male dominance over them programmed her to consider abusive relationships normal. Why moving to the other side of the country didn't turn out to be an escape from the childhood traumas that haunted Amanda, but just the next chapter of her abuse by expert manipulators. How training as an MMA fighter was the perfect cover for this abuse as no one questioned Amanda's bruises and black eyes when her "coach" trafficked her out to violent johns. How Amanda escaped this dire situation and has used her experience to help legislators and law enforcement save other trafficking victims (especially children), and what we can do to help stem the tide of abuse that may be going on in our own neighborhoods in plain sight. 630: When the Law Puts You In a Catch-22 | Feedback Friday

630: When the Law Puts You In a Catch-22 | Feedback Friday

A well-intended law in your state makes it impossible for victims of sexual abuse, or their loved ones, to get psychological help without triggering a mandatory report. In your situation, such a report would ruin the life of the offender -- who was a minor at the time and may not even remember committing the crime. How can your family seek the help it needs without initiating legal complications that will only make the overall situation worse for all parties -- including the victim? And in case you didn't already know it, Jordan Harbinger (@JordanHarbinger) and Gabriel Mizrahi (@GabeMizrahi) banter and take your comments and questions for Feedback Friday right here every week! If you want us to answer your question, register your feedback, or tell your story on one of our upcoming weekly Feedback Friday episodes, drop us a line at friday@jordanharbinger.com. Now let's dive in! Full show notes and resources can be found here: jordanharbinger.com/630 On This Week's Feedback Friday, We Discuss: A well-intended law in your state makes it impossible for victims of sexual abuse, or their loved ones, to get psychological help without triggering a mandatory report. Is it wrong to seek loopholes when this would hurt the family it's intended to help? Surprisingly, your new company accepted the highball offer you proposed during negotiations, and now your salary is twice what you'd ever hoped to land. So how can you shake the guilty feeling that you don't really deserve it? You wanted to be a jazz guitarist, not an oligarch, for goodness' sakes! Should you take it as a bad omen that your fiancée doesn't post about you on social media, or are you just reading too much into it? Is there a way to turn an insensitive racist comment into a teachable moment for the offender...inoffensively? As a manager, how can you address the deteriorating performance and poor attitude of an older employee who's worked for the company for decades? 628: Amanda Montell | Cultish: The Language of Fanaticism

628: Amanda Montell | Cultish: The Language of Fanaticism

Amanda Montell (@amandamontell) is a language scholar and author of critically acclaimed Wordslut: A Feminist Guide to Taking Back the English Language. Her latest book is Cultish: The Language of Fanaticism, which explores how cults co-opt the words we use in order to control us and affect our behavior. What We Discuss with Amanda Montell: How the uncertainty of current times drives people toward the solace of community — and the sights of aspiring cult leaders and con artists. What personal experience drew Amanda, a language scholar, to explore how language is one of the most powerful tools of manipulation cults use to exploit their victims? What thought-terminating cliches are and why they're so effective at shaping behavior. How MLMs operate like cults and who they predominately target with empty promises of wealth and prestige. How to tell if your language is being taken over by cultish manipulators. And much more...
