A SENIOR officer from the Garda National Surveillance Unit ordered the destruction of records from a tracker device used on a jeep which, the State claim, Gerry ‘The Monk’ Hutch and Jonathan Dowdall used to travel to the North before the Regency AK47s were seized.Former Detective Superintendent Ciaran Hoey said he decided to destroy the records and data in February of this year despite five people, including Dowdall and his father Patrick, facing trial in relation to the murder of David Byrne.In his evidence, Hoey said he was following guidelines and didn’t believe the records would be of any use in the trial. However, he admitted he didn’t consult the team investigating the murder, the Director of Public Prosecution or the State’s legal team before issuing the destruction order.Defence counsel for 'The Monk', Brendan Grehan SC, said that he didn’t accept that the data was useless and said that the records could have disclosed the movement of the vehicle in Northern Ireland and when officers knew it had entered a different jurisdiction.Nicola Tallant chats with Niall Donald about an extraordinary day in the Special Criminal Court when the inner workings of the Garda Siochana was laid bare and when a focus was put on the secretive and aloof Crime and Security division. It’s the north inner city neighbourhood which the State say was used by the Regency Hit team to gather before they headed to the north Dublin hotel.The Buckingham street area has long been the heartland of the Hutch clan and indeed murder accused Gerry The Monk Hutch.In the run up to detailed evidence expected over the coming weeks and centered on an apartment complex called Buckingham Village myself and colleague Niall Donald visit the location which has been described in great detail and maps at the Special Criminal Court.We see the home of The Monks mother now used as by a children's charity and the closeness of key individual caught up in the feud. Gerry The Monk Hutch has vigorously defended his 'innocence and reputation' at the Special Criminal Court where he is on trial for the murder of David Byrne.In advance of opinion evidence which was given to the court by Detective Superintendent David Gallagher of the Garda's Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau, his counsel, Brendan Grehan SC asked the court to respect his presumption of innocence of the past, present and future.DS Gallagher later told the court the Hutch Organised Crime Group was an intergenerational group run in a patriarchal system but that it is fluid and less structured than many other organised groups.Today I'm talking with my colleague Niall Donald about how 'the Monk' values his reputation and why he continues to fight for his image in the court of public opinion. A survivor of the Cold War and of the notorious Russian Gulags, Imre Arakas was an international hitman who washed up on our shores like a character dreamed up in a work of fiction.His paymaster for this trip was Daniel Kinahan, the son of Christy Kinahan Snr and director general of the Irish mafia on the Costa Del Sol where Arakas lived.He’d worked for them before and he’d always been paid swiftly and efficiently on completion of a jobHe’d flown into Dublin with a tent, a little camping stove, fishing rods and binoculars, looking every bit the nature lover who enjoyed holidays in the great outdoors.Despite his celebrity as an international hitman for hire, Arakas was confident that nobody would know him in Ireland and that he could pass off as a tourist.It didn’t quite work out like that though.
