As the Olympics continue. we visit the ill-fated voyage of the 1932 Brazillian Olympic team. In 1932, with the world going through the Great Depression, Brazil had no money to send its Olympic team to Los Angeles. Then a government official had an idea—load a ship with 50,000 bags of coffee, and have the Olympic team sell the cargo to fund the entire trip. Titus O'Reily and Mick Molloy look at a strange trip which included pretending the ship was a warship, and civil war breaking out. If you’d like more Sports Bizarre, become a member of Bizarre Plus. Hitler's Olympics Part 3 - Sports Bizarre
With the United States on board, the Berlin Olympics commenced, and first, there was the Opening Ceremony. A ceremony so grandiose that every single Olympics since has copied what the Nazis did. From the Archive: The Worst Event in Olympic History - Sports Bizarre
With Paris now underway, we look back at the worst event the Olympics have ever held. The 1904 Olympics in St Louis, Missouri, were a disaster in every way possible. Held over six months alongside the World’s Fair, it had a human zoo and a ‘savage Olympics’ pitting various indigenous groups against each other. But the marathon would be the biggest mess; competitors were refused water, runners were chased off course by dogs, there was cheating, several near deaths, and the first recorded case of doping in Olympic history. Titus O’Reily and Mick Molloy look back at the worst event ever held at an Olympics and find their favourite Olympic competitor, a Cuban named Félix de la Caridad Carvajal y Soto. Hitler's Olympics Part 2 - Sports Bizarre
Less than a year out from the 1936 Olympics it appeared likely the United States and many other countries would not attend. Hitler was furious, would the Americans humiliate him on the world stage? Or would the International Olympic Committee and the American Olympic Association find a way to turn a blind eye to what was happening in Germany? From the Archive: The 1900 Paris Olympics - Sports Bizarre
Before the 2024 Paris Olympics, we look at the first time Paris held an Olympics. The 1900 Paris Olympics were a disaster of planning and execution, to the point many athletes never even knew they’d participated in an Olympics. So poorly organised were the games that the discus field was too narrow and throws went into the crowd, while the long jumpers turned up to discover they had to dig their own pit. As well as standard Olympic fare, there was cannon shooting, hot air ballooning, pigeon shooting, kite flying, driving a mail carriage and fishing. Titus O’Reily and Mick Molloy look at the most shambolic Olympics ever, an event that saw kids press-ganged into competing and the marathon ended in a twelve-year legal battle.
