Kun Ted Shaughnessy ammuttiin kuoliaaksi omassa kodissaan, poliisin ensimmäinen teoria oli, että teon motiivina oli ollut päästä käsiksi Tedin ja hänen vaimonsa Coreyn arvotavaroihin. Korukauppaa pyörittäneellä pariskunnalla oli kotona esimerkiksi arvokkaita jalokiviä ja erilaisia koruja. Lopulta murhan taustalta paljastui kuitenkin monimutkaisempi vyyhti ja henkilökohtaisempi motiivi.
