These narratives sanitize what should have been obvious red flags, treating Epstein like a complicated anomaly instead of a man who benefited from extraordinary insulation that regular defendants never receive. Framing critics as mere “cynics” further dismisses informed analysis and shields institutions from accountability.

This downplaying serves a purpose: incompetence is a safe explanation that preserves faith in powerful systems and avoids confronting uncomfortable questions about influence, intent, and protection. By focusing on process failures rather than deliberate choices, legacy media substitutes passive language and vague theories for hard scrutiny of who made decisions and why Epstein repeatedly survived scandals that should have ended him.
