Day 13 A Suitcase Full of Stones

Day 13 A Suitcase Full of Stones

DAY 13 — THE SUITCASE FULL OF STONES

A group of travelers began a long uphill journey.
One man carried a heavy old suitcase,
struggling from the very first step.

Halfway up the hill, he collapsed on a rock, sweating.
A fellow traveler asked,
“What do you have in there?”

The man replied,
“I don’t really know…
I’ve been carrying this suitcase for years.”

Curious, they opened it together—
and to their shock, it was filled with stones.

Not valuables.
Not clothes.
Just stones.

The traveler whispered,
“I don’t even remember why I started carrying them.”

With trembling hands,
he lifted the suitcase
and tipped it over the edge of the cliff.

As it emptied, his face changed.
His shoulders lifted.
His breath lightened.
He stood up and said,
“I didn’t need the stones.
I just didn’t know I could let them go.”

Many of us enter Lent carrying suitcases full of stones—
not physical weight,
but emotional burdens we never questioned:
old guilt,
family expectations,
unfinished arguments,
labels people gave us,
burdens we inherited but never chose,
roles we’re afraid to release,
sorrows we’ve rehearsed so long they feel like identity.

You grow tired and think,
“Life is too hard.”
But often the journey isn’t what’s exhausting—
the unnecessary weight is.

Lent invites you to open the suitcase:
What are you carrying that God never asked you to carry?
What heaviness have you accepted as normal?
What stone is wearing you down?

Repentance isn’t only about sin—
sometimes it is about unburdening.

Christ didn’t say,
“Carry everything.”
He said,
“Come to me… and I will give you rest.”

Some of your stones must be dropped
before resurrection morning.
