Ashley's father was not a storyteller. He didn't chase the supernatural, and he wasn't the kind of guy to make things up. So when he told his daughter about the night he encountered a three-foot, gray-skinned, hairless creature standing upright in the road outside the family barn on the Oregon coast, she believed him. The thing had no distinguishable face, moved like nothing natural, and when he followed it into the brush, it seemed to shimmer and phase in and out of visibility. He called it the Hellcat after the trail behind his parents' property, and the story stuck with Ashley long after her father passed away in 2016.
