Dyke drama: fact or fiction?

Would you move in with your girlfriend soon after the first date, u-haul style? Or would you rather be your girlfriend’s friendly neighbour for 18 months before moving in together, like Casey?

On today’s episode, our hosts deal with lesbian relationship stereotypes, and the 'drama' that is often associated with them. After talking about Reading Pride and their favourite pride festivities, Casey and Lea start today’s discussion by sharing some statistics (and raising a host of questions) about lesbian relationships.

They then delve into how the perception of women in society and the general lack of healthy and positive representations of lesbian relationships are to blame for the equation ‘lesbians + romantic relationship = drama’. And what if you add a conservative religious environment as a further variable, as Casey does?

Well, it should come as no surprise that perceptions of queer relationships and their legitimacy become even more negative. Ending the episode on a lighter note, our hosts share their favourite lesbian drama scenes as witnessed on the small screen (watch out The L Word and Killing Eve fans!) and Lea’s choice of pick-up line takes a dramatic turn as it transforms into a mild lesbian dad joke.

Outline:

00:00 – 06:32 – Intro, gay day check-up and Reading Pride

06:33 – 08:20 – Today’s topic: relationship 'drama'

08:21 – 13:44 – Polar opposites: Lea and Casey’s experience of lesbian relationships

13:45 – 21:08 – Is 'Lesbian Bed Death' a thing, and what about other types of relationships?

21:09 – 32:53 – Lesbian relationship drama and the assumptions underlying the stereotype

32:54 – 39:58 – Favourite bit of lesbian drama on television? The L Word and Killing Eve

39:59 – 41:59 – Outro and Lea’s pick-up line

The statistics discussed during the segment on 'Lesbian Bed Death', together with other fun facts about lesbian relationships, can be found here.
