The staff in the office immediately noticed the odd girl with the woman. She walked funny, was emaciated, drooling, didn’t make a sound, and when asked, the woman mentioned that the girl was 13. The staff thought she was seven. This began one of the saddest cases of child welfare in history, and one which fascinated researchers for years.
