Feuds were fought across the mountains of Appalachia after the Civil War, as families competed for the newly developed timber and coal riches in the area. One of the most well-known, outside the famous Hatfield-McCoy feud, was the one in eastern Kentucky between the Martins and the Tollivers, better known as the Rowan County War.
