That night, Cyarah and Altomare had a friend—identified in court records as J.B.—over for dinner, and after the three used recreational drugs, Altomare became agitated, pulled out a .40-caliber handgun, and fired at J.B., who fled. What happened in the minutes that followed is unknown, but when police arrived in response to reports of gunfire, Cyarah was found with a gunshot wound to the forehead and later died at the hospital. Evidence showed Altomare fired multiple rounds throughout the apartment and outside the building. Altomare was convicted of murder, felonious assault, and related weapons offenses.
