Well hello again Sapien people. I’m really excited about this episode. I feel like I’ve found another gem from the far reaches of the globe. Aviaja is of Inuit descent and was born in Greenland where she continues to do her research. Her work revolves around the 98% animal-based diets of the native people there. SHe also is a public speaker and activist for the preservation of their native animal-based diet which is being jeopardized by anti-meat activists and plant-based ideals of the government recommendations. They are trying to get people to eat industrialized plant-based foods that have to be shipped into their country instead of eating their natural diet. She’s a microbiologist with a Ph.D. in microbial ecology and bioinformatics. She’s been researching the microbiology of Greenland and the broader Arctic through large amounts of DNA sequencing data, also called metagenomics. She’s particularly interested in studying traditional Greenlandic foods eaten by the inuit. We get into all kinds of interesting topics, especially around fermented foods, which are mostly animal foods in her culture. You’ll want to make sure to stick around for this entire interview. A few quick announcements - get the free Sapien Food guide on the new http://sapien.org site. It’s like a cheat sheet to being healthy for life.
