Blessed Is The One Who . . . Today’s Gospel is one of the most important Marian passages in the bible. Upon first hearing, one would not think so. Indeed, it almost sounds like Our Lord is slighting Our Lady. Not so! When we hear about Our Lady in the Gospel, this passage is not normally sited. Yet, again, it is one of the most important. It is the one place where we hear Jesus talk about His mother. (Lk 11:27-28). One would think this passage would be more well known and more talked about by theologians. In just two verses, they are incredibly important in understanding the greatness of Our Lady. Jesus Tells Us of the Greatness of His Mother Jesus is preaching, and the hearts of many are moved. One lady was so stirred she can not contain herself. She is overwhelmed by Jesus’ preaching, and how marvelous and good He is. Her words that she cries out complements His family and His Mother. How proud His Mother must be to produce a Son so great as this! How blessed by Heaven she must be! If the Son is so marvelous . . . there must also be something marvelous about the life of the woman who raised Him. This woman in so struck with the greatness of Jesus. She is also struck with the one who is closest to Him in human terms than anyone else, His Mother. She must be remarkably happy and grace-filled. Blessed is the womb that bore you and the breasts in which you nursed. In other words, Blessed is Your Mother! Jesus then corrects her, by suggesting she say something else. This is what, at first glance, sounds puzzling. One could rightfully ask, does Jesus not want us to praise His Mother? No! That is not what Jesus is implying or saying!
