Drawn to Jesus, the Woman Asks Jesus for Help In the first reading (not included in this media), the Lord says . . . . . . I will be the Lord over all the tribes of Israel. At the time the Lord said this, for over a century, most of the tribes of Israel no longer exists. Only the small kingdom of Judea still exists. For the other tribes, they no longer exist. Their people deported. Foreigners took their place living in these lands. They are the famous lost tribes of Israel. So, imagine the force behind the Lord’s statement! The tribes did not exist for over a century due to their sins and attitudes of the people toward God. Then the Lord tells the prophet Jeremiah, He will be the Lord of the people. Why? Because of the Lord’s love for us! The Lord has something greater in mind than the resettling of Israel. Something greater than just restoring Israel. Hear more within the Homily and this statement by the Lord. The Woman Approaches Jesus I will be the Lord over all the tribes of Israel. I will be the Lord over all people. In the Gospel, a Gentile woman approaches Jesus. This Syrophoenician Woman approaches Jesus and asks for His help. She realizes she cannot help her daughter physically. She needs help. This woman is an example for many of us today. Many people today cry out . . . wounded. Many believe they are outside “the people” of God. The woman is drawn to Jesus. She gets up and moves, seeking Jesus. She asks . . . help me, for my daughter is tormented. Help me, by helping my daughter. What an interesting prayer! She cries out not only for her own private needs. She cries out in her inability to comfort her child. Her inability to comfort her little girl. Help me because I cannot overcome this alone. This prayer is not just of a woman. It is also a cry for help by the world. It is a statement of things that at times, overwhelm us. Curiously, Jesus says nothing in response. This heart wrenching cry is lifted to Jesus, and He says nothing. Silence! The Lord’s ways are not our ways! Hear more in this Homily.
