Today’s Gospel Is The Only Place In Scripture Where Jesus Says Who His Mother, Mary, Really Is! The Gospel we hear today starts with a Women in the Crowd praising the Lord with a compliment . . . Blessed is the womb that bore you. Jesus replied, . . . Rather, blessed are those that hear the word of God and observe it. If a survey was possible asking Christians what their favorite Gospel reading are, it is unlikely today’s passage would rank very high. And that would be a shame. The passage we hear today is short, but important. It is the one spot in all of the Gospels where Jesus speaks directly about His mother. Now, that is important to understand! This Gospel reading is the one place where Jesus speaks to all of us . . . about who His mother really is! The context is fascinating! He has been preaching. And those that listen to Him are deeply moved. In the congregation is a woman listening to Him. She is so moved; she cries out those words (see above). She is touched by His words, His goodness and His authority. What does she do? In today’s culture, when someone does something very well, often people say that s/he’s mother and father would be very proud of you! The woman does something similar. She praises the Mother of Our Lord! How wonderful your mother must be, to give us a Son like You. How delighted she must be with You! It is very high praise for both Jesus and Our Lady. Hear more within the Homily. If it was any one of us, we would probably say . . . thank you. That is NOT what Jesus says! He says, no do not say that! He says . . . say something else! If we hit pause here, we could ask several questions! Is Jesus saying, do not celebrate Mary? Is He saying, do not praise Mary? No, that is what it looks like at first glance . . . if we quickly read the passage. That is NOT what Jesus is saying! Learn what Jesus says about His Mother, Mary!
