God is Always Ready to Extend Forgiveness and Mercy. But, YOU Must Do Something to Receive It! The note of forgiveness is apparent in today’s readings in different ways. The first reading (not included within this audio) involves physical peril. The Homily discusses a person about to be put to death as the torturer readies a white fire. We hear about someone about to enter a chamber of fire. A prayer to Heaven emerges. We hear about the calmness of the prayer. Just a few minutes left in this life, and the prayer is made in calmness. Listen to hear more about forgiveness. In the Gospel, Peter asks Jesus how many times one should forgive his brother. As many as seven times? Jesus answers seventy times seven. In the reading and the Gospel, the concern is how we deal with one another. We switch from the desperate fallen man, unable to save himself, needs something from the Lord to something different. In the Gospel, Peter asks about how the desperate fallen man needs to treat his brothers. Seven times is not a small amount of forgiveness. Jesus responds, by implying we must be willing to forgive. Jesus then tells a parable about forgiveness and how Heaven works. God is always ready to extend forgiveness. The fruit of receiving the mercy of God is extending that mercy through you.
