The Sign that Provoked the Religious Leaders Before the Lord’s Passion In today’s reading, the Lord tells us much. We hear about the resurrection of a people. In the first reading (not included within this audio) we do not hear about the resurrection of a person. We hear about the resurrection of a people. Israel has been destroyed. Its leaders are in exile. David my shepherd will lead them. But, he died 500+ years earlier. The kingship has collapsed. There is no king. The northern tribe disappeared 250+ years earlier. The Lord says; however, I will gather them all together. The Lord says there will be one people. The idea within the reading is of bringing back the people to a land that they have lost. A people scattered and lost is the idea. The Lord says He will cleanse them of their impurities, which brought the original destruction. Think about that image. People fallen, with their dignity comprised; the people will rise and be cleansed by the Lord. Wow! Remarkable! Hear more within the Homily. The Gospel reading is also remarkable. The Gospel focuses on the agitation of the religious leaders. Why are they agitated? They are worried about what was said concerning the raising from the dead of Lazarus. This sign provokes the leaders. They recognize that Jesus is performing great signs . . . great miracles. Should they believe in Him? The religious leaders do not. They focus on what the Romans will take away from the leaders if Jesus continues. They focus on what they will lose!
