Here's something most people don't know: In California, families cannot start an involuntary psychiatric conservatorship. Only hospital staff can initiate that process — and only if the patient is "gravely disabled," meaning unable to provide food, clothing, or shelter for themselves.Being violent doesn't count. Being delusional doesn't count. Terrorizing your family doesn't count. If you can tell a psychiatrist where you're going to sleep tonight, you walk out the door.Nick Reiner reportedly lived in his parents' guest house. He allegedly had food, clothing, shelter — provided by Rob and Michele. Under California law, that meant he wasn't "gravely disabled."
