BOOK CLUB: Transcendent Kingdom

Link to this episode in the new The Shameless Book Club feed: https://open.spotify.com/episode/0D39Y5QgX53l9PngQlT7AS?si=239a0943f6854fef OHHH, it's the last book club for 2020, friends! This month, we read Transcendent Kingdom by Yaa Gyasi - a novel that centres around Gifty, a neuroscientist at Stanford who studies addiction and depression neural circuits through experimenting with mice. This, we come to learn, is no coincidence. Transcendent Kingdom deals with grief, mental illness, and religion, and also takes us back through Gifty’s life: From her brother’s opioid addiction to a disappearing father to being sent to Ghana to live with her Aunt while her mother battles depression at home. Transcendent Kingdom was a NYT bestseller and is Yaa Jessie’s second published work. Mich sat down for an interview with Yaa about her novel, which we will play in the second half of this episode. Thank you so much to today’s sponsor, Penguin Books Australia and The Push by Audrey Audrain. Head here to buy a copy. Mean Girl Energy

Mean Girl Energy

Hi hi hi! Coming up on today’s show: “It’s giving mean girl”. We see this kind of comment all the time, on our own socials, and all across the internet. But what does it actually mean? What is ‘mean girl energy’ – what are ‘mean girl vibes’? This language is so evocative, but are we actually using it to call out mean behaviour, or are we using it to just… shut women down? This episode of Shameless is brought to you by CeraVe’s Blemish Control range – Developed with Dermatologists to help you Clear it Up Like A Derm. The ultimate divorce album

The ultimate divorce album

Hello! On today’s show: Lily Allen and her new album, of course, we decode the lyrics, the stories, as much as we possibly can.  Plus, Kristen Bell strikes twice, all the latest in Prince Andrew’s disastrous fall from grace, and it would appear Sophie Turner and Chris Martin are dating? This week, Mich recommended reading Man’s Search for Meaning. Zara recommended The Rest is Politics’ Murdoch series. Listen to ‘Lily Allen and David Harbour’s drip-fed divorce’ right here. Who's a Scientologist?

Who's a Scientologist?

Hi there! Coming up on today’s show: it seems like every time SNL cast member Chloe Fineman is mentioned on the internet, the top comment is always something like – “She’s funny, but she’s a Scientologist.” Is it true that Chloe Fineman and her family have ties to Scientology? If it is… wouldn’t that make her a victim who deserves our sympathy, not some big bad bully who deserves to be taken down a peg? On today’s show, Zara recommended Jennifer Aniston on Armchair Expert.  Huge thanks to Love Island Australia for making this episode of Shameless possible. Also, shout-out to Dyson and the Dyson Co-anda Airwrap2x.  No Culty Vibes on TikTok Neurotology Music Video by SNL Elisabeth Moss in The New Yorker Your hosts are Zara McDonald (@zamcdonald) and Michelle Andrews (@michelleandrews1). Write in, Dorothy

Write in, Dorothy

Hello! On today’s show: Calling all Benson Booners!!! His ex-girlfriend is hinting that all did not end well in their relationship, and we need to spend HEAPS of time talking about it. Plus, that Kristen Bell anniversary post, the Hailey Bieber/Selena Gomez headlines kick off again, we wouldn’t mind talking about the Golden Bachelor, if that’s OK? And then, wtf is 6 7. This week, Mich recommended watching The Perfect Neighbour on Netflix. Zara recommended Famous Last Words with Jane Goodall on Netflix. Big thanks to Myer for making this episode possible. "But what about me?"

"But what about me?"

Hiya! Coming up on today’s show: “What about me?” That is the overwhelming theme within so many comment sections these days, and we wanted to deep it. Why do we feel like absolutely everything we see on the internet has to be tailored individually to us? Is this just the natural reaction to how ultra-personalised our algorithms have become? Thankyou so much to Elite Eleven for making this episode of Shameless possible. Also, shout-out to Bumble! On today’s show, Mich recommended Ted Sarandos on the Aspire Podcast. She needs a higher bar! Preach!

Hiya!  On today’s show: Louis Tomlinson’s interview on the DOAC might just be the best celebrity interview we’ve ever listened to, Dolly Parton posted a… proof-of-life video but more on that later, and we might have our ‘first egg on us for egging ourselves too early’ situation on our hands, because Katy Perry and Justin Trudeau very much look like a couple!!!! Then, we share some of Diane Keaton’s most iconic quotes after the news of her passing, and finally, why is Travis Kelce signing Taylor Swift’s CDs lol. This week, Zara recommended Louis Theroux interviewing Ed Sheeran. And here is the link to Louis Tomlinson on The Diary of a CEO. Big thanks to Bumble for making this episode possible. Give love – and Bumble – another shot. Bumble now has a built-in Coaching Hub, with expert guidance and tailored tips. It’s like having your bestie in the app with you. Just… slightly more qualified.
