BETOOTA TALKS: Dr Ken Henry

In the last Betoota Talks before the election, we decided to have a chat to someone who isn't asking for you to vote for them this weekend. Someone who can speak freely and honestly about the state of the nation, and what lies ahead. One of the nation's leading economists, the Taree product swung by for a wide ranging chat about economics, environmentalism and growing up in timber logging country that's still battling with its identity. A great yarn, and one worth listening to.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

BETOOTA TALKS: Josh Burns Labor MP For Macnamara

BETOOTA TALKS: Josh Burns Labor MP For Macnamara

Josh Burns was the youngest member of the Labor caucus when he was elected to parliament in 2019, but he faces tough opposition on both sides to retain the pivotal seat of Macnamara at the upcoming election. Situated in Melbourne, Macnamara is one of the most diverse seats in the nation, home to a wide range of cultures, communities and ethnicities. At the last election, Burns defeated both the Liberals and the Greens by just 2% of the vote, and it could be an even closer finish this time. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

BETOOTA TALKS: Victorian Socialist Purple Pingers & Democratic Campaigner Kyle Middleton

BETOOTA TALKS: Victorian Socialist Purple Pingers & Democratic Campaigner Kyle Middleton

The first of our mid-week podcasts that will be published in the lead up to the election features two figures on opposite ends of the political scale. First up, a Senate candidate from the Victorian Socialists, Jordan Van Den Lamb, better known by his online persona Purple Pingers. Jordan is in the headlines again this week after Anthony Albanese had a shot at him because he is encouraging people in Victoria to squat in empty houses in response to the housing crisis. He's got some rather radical ideas and he does represent the fringe in Australian politics, but as we know in Australian politics, sometimes the fringe even gets a start. The second interview you'll hear is with more of an establishment figure in politics. He's an American named Kyle Middleton. He worked on the Kamala Harris campaign in the last US presidential election and has a lot of interesting insights about what went wrong and what could have been done differently. We chat about how the American political system differs to the Australian political system, but also how the American system is heavily influencing the current Australian federal election campaign. BETOOTA TALKS: Shadow Treasurer Angus Taylor (Member For Hume)

BETOOTA TALKS: Shadow Treasurer Angus Taylor (Member For Hume)

A Rhodes Scholar from Nimmitabel with a Master of Philosophy in Economics from Cambridge. He cut his teeth at McKinsey before helping establish Fonterra, the Kiwi dairy co-op whose creation is now studied at Harvard Business School as one of the greatest feats of agribusiness strategy in the modern era. That should qualify him for the role of Federal Treasurer right? Now, he’s pitching nuclear power as the affordable answer to Australia’s energy future and facing the task of trying to win back government against significant headwinds. We ask is he the man from the high country who can win back Teal seats and bring the “colt from Old Regret” back into the fold? Or will the Canberra machine chew him up and spit him out? We talk policy, power bills, and political branding and why Treasurer Jim Chalmers reckons he’d be “shit”. You can judge that for yourself. Like any good country boy, he didn’t arrive at The Advocate’s newsroom empty handed. Angus came bearing hats, a branded mug with his famous self-congratulatory tweet on it, some notepads, shopping bags and stickers. We appreciate that. Good Job, Angus.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
