Exceeding Great Reward
Genesis 15:1, “After these things the word of the LORD came unto Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward.”
Everywhere we turn today, in society, in the business world, and in the home, tensions and pressures are creating a spirit of fear in the lives of people.

We are constantly hearing of people taking a gun and going into schools and killing as many as they can before they commit suicide. Our kids are afraid to go to school today.

Abraham lived in a time when it was not uncommon to fear. God makes him a promise to protect him. He said, “. . . Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward.”

In the News on TV we see the reports concerning wars and rumors of wars. Our soldiers (remember to pray for them) have the best protective gear that any army in the world has ever had. But it does very little good when a car-bomb goes off and you are standing next to it.

We try to protect our brave men from harm. However, our best efforts are not enough at times. But when God makes you a promise like: “I am thy shield and thy exceeding great reward” you can count on being safe. God is everywhere at the same time. He is all-powerful. Nothing can neutralize His ability to keep this promise. So when God says, “Fear not,” it is very comforting.

God does not want us to fear. David knew the reality of a life free from fear. He wrote in Psalms 23:4, “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.”

God has not given us the Spirit of fear: 2 Timothy 1:7, “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” We have no reason to fear when our heavenly Father says, “fear not.”
