EU AI Act: Groundbreaking Regulation Ushers in New Era of Trustworthy AI

The journey to this point has been long and arduous. The European Commission first proposed the AI Act in April 2021, and since then, it has undergone numerous amendments and negotiations. The European Parliament formally adopted the Act on March 13, 2024, with a resounding majority of 523-46 votes. This was followed by the Council's final endorsement, paving the way for its publication in the Official Journal of the European Union on July 12, 2024.

The EU AI Act is a comprehensive, sector-agnostic regulatory regime that aims to foster the development and uptake of safe and lawful AI across the single market. It takes a risk-based approach, classifying AI systems into four categories: unacceptable risk, high-risk, limited-risk, and low-risk.
