The Bread that Never Runs Out | John Chapter 6 | Missionary Joe Consford | Author | Storyteller

Today we step into one of the most unforgettable chapters in all of Scripture — John chapter 6. This passage is packed with miracles and powerful teaching. Jesus feeds the five thousand, walks on the water, and then declares something that changed everything: “I am the bread of life.” This chapter is not just about physical bread — it’s about the hunger of the soul, and the Savior who alone can satisfy it. Scripture Reading We read through the full text of John 6 (KJV), with pauses, tone shifts, and stage notes to help you take in the depth of what Jesus said and did. Story – The Bread that Never Runs Out Years ago, there was a little boy in West Africa whose family was very poor. Every day he would go out to sell a small bag of peanuts to help his mother buy food. One afternoon, after hours in the hot sun, he hadn’t sold a single bag. He sat down on a dusty road, discouraged and hungry, wondering how they would eat that night. Just then, a missionary walked by. The boy hesitated—should he ask for help? Finally, he held out the little bag of peanuts. The missionary bought them all and gave the boy more than enough money. But then, instead of keeping the peanuts, he said, “Son, take these home to your family. Tonight, you will eat.” The boy was shocked. “But… you paid me. Now you’re giving me the food too?” The missionary smiled: “Yes, because this is how Jesus gives. He doesn’t just provide enough—He provides more than enough.” That evening, the boy’s family ate peanuts with joy, and the boy kept repeating to his mother, “He paid, and then He gave it all back. He paid, and then He gave it all back.” Years later, that same boy became a Christian. He told his testimony with tears in his eyes: “That day, I learned about the kind of God who doesn’t just fill my stomach for a night, but fills my soul forever.” Reflection When we hear about that little boy, we can’t help but think of the multitude in John 6. They were hungry, tired, and without resources. Yet, Jesus not only gave them food — He gave them abundance. Twelve baskets remained after everyone was filled. That’s the heart of our Lord: He gives far beyond what we expect. The boy in the story never forgot how the missionary first paid the price and then gave the gift back. Isn’t that what Jesus has done for us? On the cross, He paid the price of our sin — something we could never afford. But He didn’t stop there. He gave us eternal life, joy, and peace, freely and overflowing. This chapter forces us to ask: What are we hungry for? The crowd wanted full bellies. The boy wanted to sell his peanuts. But Jesus says, “Labour not for the meat which perisheth.” In other words, don’t waste your life chasing what won’t last. Instead, pursue the Bread that endures to everlasting life. If we’re honest, we often settle for crumbs when God is offering a feast. We look to careers, relationships, or money to fill us, but they leave us empty again. Only Jesus says: “I am the bread of life. He that cometh to me shall never hunger.” So today, every time you feel an ache of hunger, or reach for food, or think of your next meal, let it remind you: the deepest hunger of your soul can only be satisfied in Christ. He is the Bread that never runs out. Outro What a powerful chapter! We’ve seen miracles, we’ve heard the hard sayings of Jesus, and we’ve been reminded that only Christ can truly satisfy. Tomorrow, we continue our journey in the Word with another unforgettable chapter: John chapter 7. We’ll hear how Jesus went up secretly to the Feast of Tabernacles and boldly proclaimed His message in the temple. It’s a chapter filled with conflict, questions, and a call to faith. Don’t miss it. Until then, remember: Jesus is the Bread of Life — come to Him, and you will never hunger again.
