[118] How To Build a Modern MSP for Business Growth and Success

In this episode, Richard talks to Erick Simpson. Erick is one of the true architects of what we now know as the Managed Service Provider channel. Eric co-founded, developed and sold one of the first pureplay MSPs in the industry, and then co- founded MSP University and authored four books.

He told Richard how he got started in the MSP world and the difference between having a job and running a business. They also considered what it means to be a ‘modern MSP.’

Richard and Erik discussed the most significant changes in the IT industry and how the pandemic changed the way internal IT departments view MSPs. Erick explained the idea of ABC clients and why you should be clear on which clients fall into which category.

They talked about why MSPs should promote cyber security insurance, and alongside that, how and why to communicate the importance of cyber protection to their clients to encourage them to take it seriously.

Finally, they talked inspiration and motivation – what gets Erick out of bed in the morning and excited for his day, who’s inspired him the most, both personally and professionally, and what’s coming next for him.
