The population of the country is approximately 10.6 million people, with the majority living in urban areas such as the capital city, Santo Domingo (2,201,941), Santiago (1,200,000), and La Romana (208,437). The official language is Spanish, and the country has a diverse culture that has been shaped by its indigenous, African, and European heritage.
