The Real Dilophosaurus Dinosaur Behind Jurassic Park

Dinosaur discoveries can change what we know about famous dinosaurs. In this episode, we explore dinosaur science through the real Dilophosaurus — and what Jurassic Park got wrong.

Dilophosaurus is famous for its distinctive double crest, but its real story is much different from the small, venomous dinosaur shown in Jurassic Park. Garrett and Sabrina explain that there is no evidence that Dilophosaurus had a frill, venom, or the ability to spit, and they compare its fictional size with the roughly 20-foot-long animal described in the episode. They also explore what scientists think about its crests, vision, teeth, possible hunting and scavenging behavior, swimming, and relationship to other early theropods. The episode traces the dinosaur's discovery in Arizona and the process that eventually established Dilophosaurus as its own genus.
