NFL Free Agency – How It All Started (Pre-Modern Era)

NFL Free Agency – How It All Started (Pre-Modern Era)

This episode we fire up the DeLorean and head back to learn about free agency in the NFL  Every year in the middle of March, many NFL players strike it rich. It wasn't always this way. Players didn't have much leverage at the birth of the NFL. Sure, we learned about Pudge Heffelfinger becoming the first dude to get paid for playing football way back in episode 2, but that doesn't mean players were always getting paid well. It took some time for the balance between the players and owners to come together, and it all picked up steam in 1974. This episode walks you from the beginning (1920) through right before the moment that is declared the turning point in modern NFL free agency. So strap on your seat belt, and let’s get ready to take this baby up to 88mph.
