Episode 9 - Annie Talks About Christmas-themed December Celebrations

This podcast reveals the back stories behind certain days in December that you may or may not already know. As Christmas draws near, I thought it would be fitting to dedicate this podcast to talk about Christmas-themed days throughout the entire month of December. Dec 4 - Santa's List Day Are you on the naughty or nice list? http://www.holidayinsights.com/moreholidays/December/santaslistday.htm Dec. 6 - St. Nicholas Day Named after the real christian Saint Nicolas who lived in Greece. He became a priest then a bishop and legend has it he gave up all his belongings to follow Christ. He gave to the needy, especially to children. The idea of hanging stockings originated with St. Nicholas. He actually three gold coins through open windows of the poor, and one day a gold coin landed in a child's stocking and quickly news spread of this. So every year thereafter, children would hang up their stockings "in hopes that St. Nicholas would soon be there." http://www.holidayinsights.com/moreholidays/December/stnicholasday.htm Dec. 9 - Christmas Card Day A few decades ago, sending Christmas cards through the mail was a holiday "must." It was popular and it meant "status" to those who received them. Not sure who originated Dec. 9, but it was rumored that Henry Cole started this and marketed the term Christmas Card. http://www.holidayinsights.com/moreholidays/December/stnicholasday.htm Dec. 12 - Poinsettia Day, declared official by the Act of Congress. The name Poinsettia was actually in honor of a man named Joel Roberts Poinsett, who died on Dec. 12, 1851. He was was the first Ambassador to Mexico. He brought this color plant from Mexico to his plantation in the U.S. and grew them in his Greenville, S.C. plantation and gave them as gifts to all his friends. http://www.holidayinsights.com/other/poinsettia.htm Dec. 14 - Roast Chestnuts Day We sing about this in the holiday song, "the Christmas Song" - "Chestnuts roasting on an open fire..." This is a fairly new day brought on by Holiday Insights created only recently in 2015. http://holidayinsights.com/moreholidays/December/roast-chestnuts-day.htm Dec. 20 - Go Caroling Day There is no factual information recorded to date, but looks like the World Wide Web recognizes this day as Go Caroling Day, however, a small number of sites report Dec. 19 as Go Caroling Day. I say, pick a day and just go caroling! http://holidayinsights.com/moreholidays/December/roast-chestnuts-day.htm Dec. 21 - Humbug Day This is not so much a real holiday, but one that was created by the folks at Wellcat.com and it is a day that "allows everyone preparing for Christmas to vent their frustrations." You'd have to be in a pretty sour mood to go to the trouble of creating such a day. It marks a day for those who don't celebrate Christmas, Hannukah, Kwanzaa or anything else, but rather Festivus is a day for the "rest of us." Haha. It marks the day when Jesus Christ was born, truly the reason for the season.
