Michael, Mary ja Jennifer Short elivät rauhallista elämää Oak Levelin pikkukaupungissa Virginiassa. Ainoa murhe perheen elämässä olivat Michaelin bisnekset, jotka olivat jo pidemmän aikaa menneet huonoon suuntaan.
