Due to the mass incarceration of men of color, many fathers have been absent from their children's lives. The trauma associated with a father's absence contributes to generational family trauma.

New social welfare policies that recognize the impact of mass incarceration and the importance of fathers' involvement in families can go a long way to ensuring healthy children and families.
