Mary Ellen Pleasant was a self-made millionaire who was worth 30 million dollars at her peak. She used her money to invest in real estate and other businesses but most importantly, she used her wealth to ignite change. For example, she was a key figure in John Brown's raid on Harper's Ferry in 1859. But how did a woman with so much wealth spend the latter stages of her life in poverty?
