Vuonna 1981 Brad McCoy palasi kotiin työvuorostaan kaivoksella ja löysi vaimonsa Wandan surmattuna. Viisi viikkoa myöhemmin Wandan siskon mies Roger Keith Coleman pidätettiin epäiltynä Wandan raiskauksesta ja murhasta.
