The Accounting the Lord Will Look for Us on Judgement Day Today’s lesson from the Gospel may be at first a strange lesson. The Gospel tells the story about the steward who was not kind to the servants. When the master returns, he tells the steward to make an accounting . . . because he can no longer remain his steward. Scripture continues and the steward brings in all who owed something to the master. He tore up notes and had them write new promissory notes for a lower amount. The steward did this to gain favor with the people who owed a sum to the master. The Lesson: How the Faithful Often Take for Granted the Gift of Our Salvation Now Jesus could have told His disciples about holy men, but the Lord praises a man that we would classify a thief or criminal. The lesson the Lord wishes to speak about is how the faithful often take the gift of our salvation for granted. In taking our salvation for granted, we squander this gift. So. the Lord tells us the story of the steward. He has not been faithful. He is a man who has been given a significant responsibility and that normally means he is trustworthy and has the character to perform such duties. The master then hears about the steward, who has not been performing in good faith. The master trusts the steward to do the job and does not. In fact, he has enriched himself, and taken value away from the master’s estate. The owner then says, there must be an accounting of your responsibilities. The steward realizes . . . he is in trouble. The horizon that Jesus is speaking is not merely an earthly deadline. He uses this as an example. Faced with an earthly deadline, the steward will try anything to make it right. Hear more within the Homily. Everyone Will Face an Accounting Jesus reminds His disciples that you have been given much and have been trusted with much. The disciples have been given gifts to be used on behalf of the One Who gave them. Eventually, there is a calling to go over the books. Eventually, everyone is called into the office to review the books … to review how the gifts given were used on behalf of the Lord. Have we used the gifts we have been given wisely? Have I squandered it? Or have I neglected it? Have I missed used these gifts? The Lord calls out the steward. The steward realized he misused the trust of the master. He decides to misuse it some more and writes lower promissory notes. Jesus marvels at the industriousness of the steward. Hear more about the heavenly ledger.
