There are many people who seem successful but inside they never feel good enough, they always think that they should have performed better. They are perfectionists. If you add the ability to know when to settle for that which is good enough and when to strive for excellence you will succeed with a smile.

Excellence is working towards your own personal best, aiming at the highest standards you are capable of there and then, with flexibility and freedom. It is about enjoying the process of practicing and performing and gaining deep fulfilment from the experience in itself. When striving for excellence you can always feel good about yourself.

In the poetry of ambitions there is Maximus and Satisfix. When Maximus sits down for dinner at a restaurant every page in the menu will be read. The waiter, the chef, the owner and some of the other guests will be interviewed before dinner is ordered. Satisfix will open the menu, close her eyes and put a finger somewhere and exclaim with surprise: “Tempura fried avocado, why not?”.

Maximus wants to do the right thing, make the best choices, to avoid mistakes and will strive for perfection oblivious to cost.

Satisfix looks for a bigger picture, has alternative goals, enjoys the ride, appreciates the company and prefers a smooth process over perfect details.

A lot of people create their belief about who they are early on and hold on to this identity dearly because it provides a sense of predictability and certainty for everybody involved. However, neuroscience has shown that your brain has an amazing plasticity that allows you to learn new things and change as long as you live. This includes your beliefs about yourself. Your self-esteem is a collection of beliefs about your value, and is in many ways more fiction than fact. If you do your best you are good enough, stating anything else is defying gravity. You were born being enough, and your life is a process of finding out how much more enoughness you can develop on the way. This is why it is best to compare your progress with your earlier self and using the enoughness of others for inspiration. The past you, the future you and the present you are the same team, Team You. Be the support you need. Find the best ways you can collaborate on this adventure. Take full responsibility for you, by holding yourself accountable in a positive way for everything you do. Instead of regretting a mistake, find out what you need to do differently and do that. Who you are is a story told by many, including yourself. Feeling good about yourself relies on defining yourself as a work of art in progress rather than an outcome.
