Welcome to episode 192 of the Sexology Podcast! Today it’s my pleasure to welcome back Amir Mohebbi to the podcast. In this episode Amir and I talk about medical treatments for sexual dysfunctions, looking at the issues that cause sex to be painful and learning to change your lifestyle to improve your sex life.

Amir Mohebbi is a proud Iranian-American currently completing his psychiatry residency at St. Louis University. He trained under mentorship from world-renowned forensic psychiatrists, Drs. William J. Newman and Brian J. Holoyda, whom co=authored a review related to his interests in sleep medicine and forensics entitled “Sexsomnia as a Defense in Repeated Sex Crimes”.

Amir presented his work alongside an expert panel consisting of forensic psychiatrists at the American Psychiatric Association 175th Annual Meeting in San Francisco, CA. He earned his medical degree from St. Louis University and holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from the University of California, Irvine.

In this episode, we discuss how recovering from prostate cancer can take 3-5 years, the common sexual changes after recovering from prostate cancer and looking at useful sex toys that are available and appropriate.  Dr Lauren Walker is a therapist, researcher, author and entrepreneur. Dr Walker translates science about sexuality into real life and helps people grow in the areas of sexuality, intimacy, relationships and self-care. Dr Walker is passionate about reducing the stigma associated with sexuality, mental health and health.   Dr Walker completed her PhD in 2013, she completed a specialized clinical fellowship in sexual dysfunction after cancer treatment. Dr Walker received mentorship from nationally recognized experts in sexual medicine.   Dr Walker recently received Calgary's Avenue Magazine's Top 40 Under 40 award. This prestigious award distinguishes recipients as rising stars; high achievers who are impacting their field and the broader community, and who are moving the city of Calgary forward.   She has also developed several innovative sexual health programs for cancer patients and also directs the Oncology Sexual Health Lab at the University of Calgary. There she is on the faculty as an Adjunct Associate Professor where she conducts research on sexuality. Dr Walker has over 40 scientific publications on the topic of cancer and sexuality and is co-author of a book for prostate cancer patients - Androgen Deprivation Therapy: A Guide for Prostate Cancer Patients and Their Loved Ones.   Though not sure the "perfect balance" really exists, she tries to balance her career, with being a wife and also a mom to a vibrant toddler. In this episode, we discuss erectile dysfunction, how he became interested in this area of work, and the roles jealousy and infidelity play around this issue.  Gavin Vance is a Ph. D candidate studying evolutionary psychology under the supervision of Dr Todd K. Shackelford. Gavin received his Bachelor of Science in Psychology from The University of Michigan – Flint in the Fall semester of 2017, and his Master of Science in Psychology from Oakland University during the Summer semester of 2020 after defending his master’s thesis.   Gavin's research interests, broadly, focus on human evolved psychology, patterns of romantic relationships, and human mate preferences. In particular, he is interested in studying men’s evolved sexual psychology and the consequences of these psychological adaptations on men’s behavior in romantic relationships.    Gavin has published two manuscripts investigating the relationship between ED and men’s abusive, partner-directed behaviors, with several additional manuscripts currently submitted to various research journals. He has also published a manuscript investigating mate preferences in older men and women. Gavin's dissertation work focuses on women’s physiological adaptations to prevent pregnancy during rape and assesses vaginal acidity and lubrication in response to sexually coercive audio stimuli.
