Stopping the Mind’s Proliferation

Stopping the Mind’s Proliferation

Today’s talk explores proliferation — the mind’s habit of endlessly fabricating stories, memories, cravings, and imagined futures. Just like the heart beats on its own, the ordinary mind thinks on its own, night and day. Left unchecked, it becomes a wild horse or an engine revving too high. The practice is simple but powerful: Catch the thought the moment it arises. Don’t identify with it. Don’t claim it as “mine.” Just know it — and it dissolves. If it’s emotionally charged, it may return, but each time you recognize it, its power weakens. This is the essence of mindfulness: the watcher recognizing the thought as it spins. With consistent practice, proliferation loses its force, and what remains is peace, tranquility, and equanimity. Stay patient. Stay observant. You can do this — and you must.
