Kailash K Shrestha is Kathmandu based artist, who hails from the remote village of Gairimudi, Dolakha which lies to the northeast of the capital Kathmandu. His career spans art practices employing a variety of visual languages and processes which are personal in nature but also relatable with wider social concerns. Most recently, he has been working on a series that questions and through satire critiques political movements and happenings that are rooted in social ills and malpractice. This mix- media series uses newspaper clippings, photographs, paintings and other experimental media to situate his study of the nation’s contexts within a global frame.

Shrestha is the founder of Artudio, a centre for contemporary visual arts which focuses on advancing art praxis, initiatives and visual arts education – bringing arts to the grassroots communities, public spaces and wider audiences from diverse social backgrounds. Shrestha established Pran Community Art Centre in his birthplace after the 2015 earthquake to bring the healing power of arts to his community which was significantly affected by the second quake. Through the centre he curated the Dolakha Album (2016), a residency program that focuses on embedding artists into community concerns and perspectives through homestays. Between 2017 and 2018, Shrestha designed and delivered Thames Festival Trust’s River of the World project in Nepal on behalf of the British Council.

Shrestha is the founding recipient of the Australian Himalayan Foundation’s Artist Award (2009). Besides two solo exhibitions, he has participated in several national and international workshops, residencies and events including: Kathmandu International Arts Festival (2009), Asian Art biennale (2010) and Kathmandu Triannale (2017).
