Understanding Anxiety and Burnout in your Nervous System

Burnout and anxiety are more than just emotional experiences – they’re deeply tied to how your nervous system handles stress.

When life keeps throwing challenges at you, your autonomic nervous system works overtime to protect you. But instead of finding relief, you might feel trapped in cycles of exhaustion and overwhelm.

At the core of it all is your autonomic nervous system, which operates in three states:

  • fight-or-flight,
  • rest-and-digest, and
  • the dorsal vagal response

When there’s danger, fight-or-flight kicks in, mobilizing your resources. When you’re safe, rest-and-digest takes over. But if stress doesn’t let up, your system shifts to a dorsal vagal state – a kind of mental airbag that shuts things down to protect you from overwhelm.

It can also leave you feeling numb, detached, and stuck. Sound familiar?

This is what burnout often feels like: your system trying to help but unintentionally holding you back. It’s important to always keep in mind that recovery isn’t about eliminating these responses – it’s about working with them.

When you understand what’s happening in your body and learn how to let the symptoms exist without trying to fight or fix them, you can help your nervous system recalibrate. Over time, those overwhelming sensations lose their grip, and you can start feeling like yourself again.
