Some Asses Just Need Wiping
For every woman who’s ever carried the weight of others while losing pieces of herself — this book is for you.

Some Asses Just Need Wiping is a raw, unflinching memoir that pulls back the curtain on the emotional toll of lifelong caregiving. From parenting her chronically ill mother as a child to emotionally supporting a mentally ill ex-husband, raising two young boys as a single mother, and having one son diagnosed as neurodivergent, Shelly Grimm has lived through—and risen from—it all.

If you’re part of the sandwich generation, caring for aging parents while raising children, this book will help you feel seen, heard, and validated.

In these pages, you’ll discover:

The invisible trauma children of chronically ill parents carry for decades
The generational cost of unacknowledged caregiving roles
What “help” actually looks like when someone’s drowning quietly
Ways to support caregivers (especially kids) before it’s too late
Packed with stories that are brutally honest and laced with dark humor, Shelly shares lessons that will resonate with anyone who’s ever felt invisible while doing the impossible.

Whether you’re a caregiver, survivor, or both—this book is your wake-up call, validation, and lifeline all in one.

Read it, feel it, and be changed by it.

The Chris Voss Show Podcast – A Terribly Serious Adventure: Philosophy and War at Oxford, 1900-1960 by Nikhil Krishnan

A Terribly Serious Adventure: Philosophy and War at Oxford, 1900-1960 by Nikhil Krishnan https://amzn.to/44VNCpK “Lively storytelling . . . an attempt to recast the history of philosophy at Oxford in the mid-twentieth century by conveying not only what made it influential in its time but also what might make it vital in ours.”—The New York Times Book Review What are the limits of language? How can philosophy be brought closer to everyday life? What is a good human being? These were among the questions that philosophers wrestled with in mid-twentieth-century Britain, a period shadowed by war and the rise of fascism. In response to these events, thinkers such as Philippa Foot (originator of the famous trolley problem), Isaiah Berlin, Iris Murdoch, Elizabeth Anscombe, Gilbert Ryle, and J. L. Austin aspired to a new level of watchfulness and self-awareness about language as a way of keeping philosophy true to everyday experience. A Terribly Serious Adventure traces the friendships and the rivalries, the shared preoccupations and the passionate disagreements of some of Oxford’s most innovative thinkers. Far from being stuck in their ivory towers, the Oxford philosophers lived. They were codebreakers, diplomats, and soldiers in both World Wars, and they often drew on their real-world experience in creating their greatest works, masterpieces of British modernism original in both thought and style. Steeped in the dramatic history of the twentieth century, A Terribly Serious Adventure is an eye-opening look inside the rooms that changed how we think about our world. Shedding light on the lives and intellectual achievements of a large and spirited cast of characters, Cambridge academic Nikhil Krishnan shows us how much we can still learn from the Oxford philosophers. In our fractious, post-truth world, their acute sense of responsibility for their words, their passionate desire to get the little things right, stands as an inspiring example.

The Chris Voss Show Podcast – The Reaper’s Dance: 1000 Days of COVID by Ravi R. Iyer MD

The Chris Voss Show Podcast – The Reaper’s Dance: 1000 Days of COVID by Ravi R. Iyer MD

The Reaper’s Dance: 1000 Days of COVID by Ravi R. Iyer MD https://amzn.to/3Y2G1U3 From the suburbs of Washington, DC, and northern Virginia to the bat-infested caves of Wuhan, China, Dr. Ravi Iyer traces the myriad networks of the virus that brought the entire world to its knees for twenty-four months and decimated the lives of millions in its path. The Reaper’s Dance puts you in a ringside seat to the horror of the COVID pandemic, the calculations of men who were in positions to influence the fate of millions, the science that might have unleashed the pandemic, and the science that saved the world. From the failures of governments and leaders to the triumphs of individual men and women, The Reaper’s Dance is a story of the complex and compelling tapestry of human hubris and humility, courage, and cowardice, with an enduring, cautionary message for all humankind. The Reaper’s Dance is a must-read that will inspire you, shake you, and wake you up. Additional Praise for The Reaper’s Dance: An intensely gripping account of the COVID pandemic. The writing is fast-paced and the book reads like a thriller but remains factual and very well-cited in its references. This is a book to be savored and returned to for its continued relevance long after the last page has been read…. H. H Dr. Ravi Iyer has done a fabulous job in pulling together the story on the political stance changes, the thinking on the origins of the virus, and weaving it into the narrative in a fast-moving book that gripped me from the first page. I kept catching myself thinking as I read it, “Oh yes, that did happen”, “Trump did indeed say that” … and shake my head in disbelief as I read on. I liked the stories of the specific patients that peppered the evolution of the analysis of the pandemic. Also the bit on the seniors with cognitive decline … it hadn’t occurred to me how difficult it would have been to care for that group…. A. B

The Chris Voss Show Podcast – Yesteryear by Stephen G. Eoannou

The Chris Voss Show Podcast – Yesteryear by Stephen G. Eoannou

Yesteryear by Stephen G. Eoannou https://amzn.to/3YgSHqA It’s 1930s Buffalo, and the Great Depression rages. Playwright Fran Striker needs to write the pilot for a new radio show but, to do so, he must overcome writer’s block, defeat a Gypsy curse, foil a plot to assassinate FDR, and recover stolen diamond rings belonging to an alcoholic boxing champion. Who was that masked man? Based on the controversial true-life story of Lone Ranger creator Fran Striker, Yesteryear takes us on a magical journey leading to an icon’s debut, a show that provided hope to Americans during the country’s darkest days. About the Author I’m a 5am writer. At that dark hour you can find me either writing in bed or writing up in the cupola of my 1865 Second Empire Victorian I’m restoring. No coffee. No tea. No candles or incense burning. Just me typing away with my one-eyed dog close by. I love stories and novels with strong characters and a strong sense of place. The turf I carved out for myself is my hometown of Buffalo, New York, the setting and inspiration for much of my work. I’m trying to do for Buffalo what William Kennedy did for Albany and what Richard Russo did for Upstate New York. I think the three of us should discuss this over drinks. I’ll buy the first round. Some of the books I’ve read recently are Secret Identity by Alex Segura and Fortune Favors The Dead by Stephen Spotswood. I also re-read It’s Superman! by Tom De Haven. Currently on my nightstand is Don’t You Know There’s A War On?: The American Homefront 1941-1945 by Richard R. Lingeman. I like reading fiction and non-fiction set during The Great Depression and World War Two. My mother, who grew up during this period, always told me that I romanticized that time. She was right. When I’m not writing, you can find me working on the house or hunting for antiques and books to put in the house. I’ve been restoring the front staircase for over two years now. Evidently, I write and scrape paint slowly.

The Chris Voss Show Podcast – The Life We Chose: William “Big Billy” D’Elia and the Last Secrets of America’s Most Powerful Mafia Family by Matt Birkbeck

The Life We Chose: William “Big Billy” D’Elia and the Last Secrets of America’s Most Powerful Mafia Family by Matt Birkbeck https://amzn.to/3O0DCV4 “The Life We Chose—an unforgettable story. A really great read.” —Nicholas Pileggi, author of Wiseguy and Casino and screenwriter of Goodfellas From Matt Birkbeck—investigative journalist and executive producer of Netflix’s #1 movie Girl in the Picture—a revelatory father/surrogate son story that takes readers deep inside the inner workings of the mob through the eyes of William “Big Billy” D’Elia, the right-hand man to legendary mafia kingpin Russell Bufalino, who ran organized crime in the US for more than fifty years. William “Big Billy” D’Elia is Mafia royalty. The “adopted” son of legendary organized crime boss Russell Bufalino, for decades D’Elia had unequaled access to the man the FBI and US Justice Department considered one of the leading organized crime figures in the United States. But the government had no real idea as to the breadth of Bufalino’s power and influence—or that it was Bufalino, from his bucolic home base in Pittston, Pennsylvania, who reigned over the five families in New York and other organized crime families throughout the country. For nearly thirty years, D’Elia was at Bufalino’s side, and “Russ’s son” was a witness and participant to major historical events that have stymied law enforcement, perplexed journalists, and produced false and wild narratives in books and movies—not the least of which being the infamous disappearance of union boss Jimmy Hoffa. In addition, their reach was illustrated by their relationships with Frank Sinatra, Marlon Brando, Michael Jackson, Suge Knight, and many other celebrities and personalities. D’Elia became the de facto leader of the Bufalino family upon Russell Bufalino’s imprisonment in 1979, and he officially took control upon Bufalino’s death in 1994 until his arrest in 2006, when he was charged with money laundering and the attempted murder of a witness. He pled guilty to money laundering and witness tampering and was released from federal prison in 2012. Candid and unapologetic, D’Elia is finally ready to reveal the real story behind the myths and in so doing paints a complicated, compelling, and stunning portrait of crime, power, money, and finally, family.
