In a nutshell, Search Engine Optimization is aligning your messages with what words people use most frequently to find you. There is a sweet spot between what you’re already saying and what is being searched for that can boost your visibility and help you be found more efficiently. A part of SEO is something called metadata. Metadata can be described as the behind the scenes aspect of SEO. On a website, every photograph has a name (think ‘200 x 200 man-lifting-weights’). By simply giving Google a taste of your brand and location in the name of your website’s images (‘san-jose-gym-fitness-man-lifting-weights’), you boost your chances of being found via a search engine. Similarly, page names and URLs are SEO opportunities. Erica shares with us some of her favorite tools we can use to help us get an idea of what language people are using when they’re searching on Google for a service you provide. The first tool is one that may take you by surprise--simply putting in your question into the Google search bar and letting it autofill can tell you the top 5 things people are typing in. Another tool is AskThePublic.com. It’s a list of popular questions in a particular genre. The first thing someone should do if they’re looking to increase their search engine visibility is checking the free website Ubersuggest.com.
