Pavlovian Conditioning and Blind Faith

Pavlovian Conditioning and Blind Faith

Given we allowed for three games as we switched back to our regular Thursday recording schedule for the Blue Moon Podcast, you'd have been forgiven for thinking Manchester City might have won at least one of their matches in that time... but sadly not. Three draws and a potential eight-point gap to Arsenal as they face Liverpool not long after this recording means it's not been the happiest of New Years... David Mooney is joined by City fan Adam Monk and the BBC's football correspondent John Murray to work out what's happened.
At least attention can turn away from Premier League woes for now, though, as Exeter City come to the Etihad in the FA Cup and the it's a tricky trip to Newcastle in the League Cup semi-final first leg. Since it's the first time City have ever played Exeter, we hear from football historian Gary James about the other one-off ties City have had courtesy of the FA Cup.
We also get some insight into what to expect from the Grecians on Saturday from Jon from The Big Bank Theory podcast. With City perhaps naming an inexperienced side because of injuries and fatigue in the squad, are there nerves of an upset or should a heavily-rotated City side still have enough to make it into the fourth round draw?
With the potential arrivals of Antoine Semenyo and Marc Guehi (perhaps), we also discuss what the squad needs to give it a bit more oomf in the coming weeks... Plus, what's the most heart-breaking last-minute equaliser?

To review the 2024-25 season and look ahead to what 2025-26 might bring, David Mooney is joined by City fan Chris Higginbottom, Simon Bajkowski from the Manchester Evening News, and the former City captain Paul Lake for the live show at Idle Hands in Manchester. ========== To get more podcasts or to listen without the ads, join our Patreon. Curtains Closed, Lights Off, Nobody Move

Curtains Closed, Lights Off, Nobody Move

After a disappointment at Wembley and an emotional goodbye to Kevin De Bruyne in a 3-1 win over Bournemouth, David Mooney is joined by City fan Richard Burns, The Athletic's Jon Mackenzie, and, from StatCity.co.uk, Adam Carter, to review the week. What's the difference between the denial of a goalscoring opportunity on a Saturday in a Cup Final and the denial of a goalscoring opportunity on a Tuesday in the Premier League? Lots, apparently, so we'll get into all of that. Plus, we look at the bigger picture, as performances continue to improve and the team continues to look more stable (albeit with the odd 'bozo' moment). With a crucial game against Fulham coming up where City need a point to be sure of playing in next season's Champions League, we look ahead to that and the nerves about how tight the table is in the hunt for the top five. And it's time for the alternative highlights of the season with Ciaran Murray (with a cameo from a special guest, too). ========== To get more podcasts or to listen without the ads, join our Patreon. The Aquarius Moon

The Aquarius Moon

After a dour 0-0 draw at Southampton and ahead of a third successive FA Cup Final appearance, David Mooney is joined by City fan Ally Fogg and, from StatCity.co.uk, Adam Carter. They discuss the bore draw on the south coast and look at Ruben Dias's comments after the game: Fair enough or should he keep quiet with those grumbles? Crystal Palace fan Robbie Scotcher joins the show to give insight into the feeling at Selhurst Park ahead of the trip to Wembley. Plus, there's the match with Bournemouth... where City might be needing to play catch-up in the race to finish in the top five.  That Bournemouth game is likely to be the final time that Kevin De Bruyne pulls on a blue shirt for a competitive game at The Etihad, so we're taking some time to look at his legacy at the club before what will be one of the toughest goodbyes ever said to a departing player. On top of that, there's been some transfer rumours bouncing around the mill this week, so we have a look at what's been said about Florian Wirtz, Tijjani Reijnders, Morgan Gibbs-White and Tino Livramento.  ========== To get more podcasts or to listen without the ads, join our Patreon. What Do Particle Accelerators Actually Do?

What Do Particle Accelerators Actually Do?

Following Manchester City's 1-0 win over Wolves, David Mooney is joined by City fan Richard Burns and, from Sporting News, Dom Farrell, to discuss the performance and big moments from the match. They look at the displays from both Kevin De Bruyne and Bernardo Silva, plus they talk about the fan protests from the first six minutes. With already-relegated Southampton up next, Sam Rosbottom gives us the details of all the times previously when City have faced a team in the Premier League that have already been doomed to finish inside the bottom three. We look ahead to that game and how Pep Guardiola may approach it with the FA Cup Final also in his sights. Plus, Saints fan Glen de la Cour, from Total Saints, also joins the show to explain what's gone wrong at St Mary's this season. ========== To get more podcasts or to listen without the ads, join our Patreon. Promotion at Blackburn: The 25th Anniversary Special

Promotion at Blackburn: The 25th Anniversary Special

On Sunday 7 May 2000, Manchester City completed back-to-back promotions to return to the Premier League. Just under a year after winning the third tier playoff in a dramatic match at Wembley with Gillingham, the team came from behind to win an extraordinary game with Blackburn at Ewood Park to win promotion to the Premier League. For the first time in a long time, the club were no longer under-achieving. In this special episode, David Mooney speaks to all of the key figures from the 1999-2000 season to get the inside story of how the club was able to complete its recovery from its lowest ever position to return to the top flight of English football. ========== To get more podcasts or to listen without the ads, join our Patreon. Sing a Song, Do a Silly Dance, then Play Left Back

Sing a Song, Do a Silly Dance, then Play Left Back

Another successful trip to Wembley for Pep Guardiola means a third FA Cup final in a row for Manchester City. David Mooney is joined by One Football's Dan Burke and, from the Manchester Evening News, Simon Bajkowski to discuss the 2-0 win over Nottingham Forest, with a particular focus on Rico Lewis after his performance in midfield. After the impact that Nico O'Reilly has made to the team in the last few weeks, we take a look at all of the makeshift left backs that Guardiola has employed at City - and how he's changed their role in the team depending on the skills they have. Plus we look at the role that O'Reilly could have been now and the end of the season and beyond. With a Friday night game against Wolves coming up, we look ahead to that with the help of Dave Azzopardi from Talking Wolves. Plus, there's another protest planned for that evening, so we discuss what was said in the open letter sent to Pep Guardiola by fan groups this week. ========== To get more podcasts or to listen without the ads, join our Patreon. All or Lots or Some (or Around 80%) is Forgiven

All or Lots or Some (or Around 80%) is Forgiven

A last-minute winner is always great for picking up the mood! Back-to-back victories have put Manchester City in a commanding position in the race for the top five this season and have got the confidence flowing again ahead of an FA Cup semi-final against one of the Premier League's highest performing teams, too. David Mooney is joined by City fan Helen Powell and by the BBC's Chief Football Writer, Phil McNulty, to review both the wins against Everton and Aston Villa, plus to look ahead to that Wembley trip to face Nottingham Forest at the weekend. Journalist and Forest fan Daniel Storey explains why things have been going so well for them this season (and why their Monday night win over Spurs was very, very welcome) - plus we take a look back at Stuart Pearce's time at City. It's 20 years since he took the managerial hot seat and, in a week where City face Forest, it seems appropriate to reflect on that. ========== To get more podcasts or to listen without the ads, join our Patreon.
