In July 2019, following his arrest on federal sex trafficking and conspiracy charges, Jeffrey Epstein was formally ordered remanded to custody after a detention hearing before Judge Richard Berman. Prosecutors argued that Epstein’s extraordinary wealth, private planes, offshore residences, and history of evading consequences made him an overwhelming flight risk. They also stressed that his release would pose a danger to the community, citing sworn testimony from multiple accusers and evidence that he had used money and influence to obstruct accountability in the past. Despite his defense offering an unprecedented bail package—including $100 million bond, house arrest under armed guard, and electronic monitoring—the court determined that no conditions could ensure his appearance in court or protect the public.Judge Berman’s written order underscored the seriousness of the charges and the strength of the evidence, including testimony that Epstein had sexually abused underage girls and facilitated a broad trafficking network. In the 2017 video deposition of Courtney E. Wild, taken as part of the civil case Epstein v. Rothstein in the Fifteenth Judicial Circuit Court of Florida, Wild testified under oath about her personal background, criminal history, and relevant circumstances before the court began substantive questions.
