Broadway Royalty - Lee Roy Reams - Part 1

Broadway Royalty - Lee Roy Reams - Part 1

Lee Roy Reams is a Broadway icon, celebrated for his dazzling performances, impeccable showmanship, and decades of dedication to the American musical theatre. With a career spanning over 50 years, Reams has become one of the most respected and beloved figures in the industry—an actor, singer, dancer, director, and choreographer whose work continues to inspire generations of performers and audiences alike.

He made his Broadway debut in Sweet Charity and quickly became a standout talent, going on to star in such landmark productions as Oklahoma!, Applause, Lorelei, Hello, Dolly!, La Cage aux Folles, and Beauty and the Beast. His breakthrough role came as Billy Lawlor in 42nd Street, earning him a Tony Award nomination and solidifying his status as a leading man of the Broadway stage. His performance was widely praised for its charm, elegance, and electrifying dance ability—a hallmark of Reams' style.

In addition to his celebrated onstage career, Reams has made significant contributions behind the scenes. He has directed and choreographed major productions across the country, including national tours and regional theater hits. One of his most groundbreaking roles came when he became the first man to portray Dolly Levi in Hello, Dolly!—a performance personally approved by the musical's composer, Jerry Herman. Reams' close friendship and creative partnership with Herman have made him a trusted interpreter of Herman's work and legacy.

A consummate entertainer with a sharp wit and generous spirit, Reams is also a beloved cabaret performer, known for his sparkling storytelling, lush vocals, and unmatched knowledge of Broadway history. He has taught and mentored young performers, appeared in documentaries and interviews about musical theatre, and remains a fixture in the New York theater community.

Lee Roy holds a Master of Arts in Theatre from the University of Cincinnati's College-Conservatory of Music (CCM), where he was later honored as a distinguished alumnus.
