1:2. Lecture by Dr. Covel McDermot on the importance of trees in cities

The host will give a series of lectures from different scholars, research scientists, managers, and practitioners. The first lecture is given by Dr. Covel McDermot from the Delaware State University. He gives a lecture on his PhD thesis research to provide insights into how humans influence ecology and environment through the economic preferences. Dr. McDermot is of the view that trees are excellent biomonitors and cities are natural open labs to study climate change and urbanization. Dr. McDermot spent five years in urban and rural forests in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Newark, Delaware studying how humans influence forest ecology, soil properties, tree function, and invasive plant invasion. His research finds that red maple trees in forests in a bigger city with assumed greater unban intensities from above- and below-ground impacts have higher chlorophyll content, greater nutritive quality, higher stress defending compounds- polyamines and amino acids and larger stomata that indicate greater productivity and growth. He worries about trees that are growing fast and dying young. His lecture continues in segments.
