“Militarily Speaking” is a podcast produced by Armed Forces Bank that is dedicated to the military lifestyle and all the things that makes military community who they are.

Ep. 38 – Healing on Ice: The KC Warriors Story with Kevin Hutchison

In today’s episode we talk with Kevin Hutchison about the inspiring work done by KC Warriors in aiding the recovery and rehabilitation of disabled veterans through the sport of hockey. Kevin says he began playing hockey only four years prior. The concept behind the KC Warriors is to reignite the sense of camaraderie and brotherhood that many veterans miss post-service.

He explains that they aim to provide therapeutic healing to disabled veterans through team sports. They are part of the USA Hockey Warriors Division, a nationwide network of over 30 teams offering a similar service. The KC Warriors have grown impressively from eight players in 2018 to 90 in the past year.

Kevin highlights how the program provides a common mission for veterans, fostering a sense of community and shared experiences. He compares this to the feeling of companionship one might miss after a summer camp or long-term experience with a close-knit group.

Kevin reveals that he began playing hockey following encouragement from a friend when his son started playing. The high cost of entry to the sport is mitigated by partnerships with other non-profits like United Heroes League, which provides equipment to veterans and active-duty members.

Kevin's account of the therapeutic impact of the sport is inspiring. He mentions that stepping on the ice allows players to momentarily escape their everyday stresses and focus solely on the game. This mental break is invaluable for many participants, demonstrating the therapeutic power of the sport.

KC Armed Forces Hockey Classic

The KC Armed Forces Hockey Classic is an integral part of the KC Warriors program, providing a competitive and fun platform for veterans to engage in. Kevin said initially, the tournament started as a small gathering of four teams, each comprising players of mixed abilities. However, the event has grown exponentially with the latest edition of the tournament seeing twelve teams from various arms of the military and first responders, including the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines.

Kevin discusses the structure of the tournament, explaining that the registration fee covers the cost of the tournament. The surplus funds, raised through raffles and donations, go directly towards improving veterans' lives. In an exciting announcement, Kevin reveals the date of the much-anticipated I-70 Showdown against the St. Louis Blues Warriors. This match is eagerly awaited by players and fans alike, marking a highlight of the tournament.

The tournament's success is not just due to the players' dedication but also relies heavily on sponsors, such as Armed Forces Bank. Kevin emphasizes the significant role sponsors play in making the tournament possible. Their support is instrumental in covering the costs of the tournament and ensuring its smooth execution.

Supporting KC Warriors

Kevin then discusses the organizational side of the KC Warriors hockey classic tournament. The organization and planning of such an event is no small task, and Kevin explains how committees are formed to ensure everything runs smoothly.

Fundraising plays a crucial role in the success of the tournament, and Kevin explains who is responsible for tracking donations and sponsorships, which are integral to the functioning of the tournament. Kevin emphasizes the importance of getting sponsors for the 2023 tournament, noting that any donations over a certain amount will earn the donor a spot on the jersey for next year.

Kevin says it costs an estimated $600 per month to provide minimum programming for the program's 35-45 players. These costs are offset by the generous donations of sponsors and individuals.

Finally, Kevin mentions the 2022 sponsors and the raffle prize donated by Ken Mauro, a former gold medalist and Stanley Cup winner. The raffle prize is another way the organization raises funds for the program.
