Why Doesn't Raya and the Last Dragon Feel Like Classic Disney?

Did Disney almost create a modern classic with Raya and the Last Dragon—or did the film fall short of its potential?

In this episode of the Friends of Disney Podcast, we're diving into Disney's Raya and the Last Dragon and discussing why the film remains one of Disney Animation's most debated recent releases.

We explore Raya's message of trust, Sisu's optimistic outlook, the fractured world of Kumandra, and whether the movie's themes still resonate years after its release. Along the way, we discuss how the film was shaped by its era, whether Disney rushed the story, and why modern Disney movies often feel very different from classics like Aladdin, The Lion King, and Tangled.

What starts as a discussion about Raya quickly becomes a larger conversation about creativity, storytelling, trust, and the future of Disney Animation.

Topics Discussed:

• Raya and Sisu's relationship
• The theme of trust throughout the film
• Kumandra and the Five Lands
• Why the movie feels unfinished to some viewers
• Modern Disney vs classic Disney storytelling
• Creativity, corporate pressure, and filmmaking
• Disney's future as a storytelling company

Do you think Raya and the Last Dragon is underrated, or did Disney miss an opportunity to create a modern classic?
