The Cartography of Loss

A grieving father who moves with his young daughter, Ellie, back to his isolated childhood town after the sudden death of his wife. Hoping for a fresh start, he instead finds himself slipping into a nightmare when Ellie begins producing detailed, impossibly accurate maps—all guided by her mysterious imaginary friend known only as Mr. Map Maker.
At first, the father dismisses the drawings as a coping mechanism for trauma, until Ellie leads him directly to her mother’s lost bracelet, hidden in a place she could never have known. The discovery confirms the terrifying truth: Mr. Map Maker is real, ancient, and deeply malicious. The surrounding townspeople, visibly terrified, warn him again and again to stay away from the forest, but refuse to explain why.
When Ellie suddenly vanishes, taken by the towering shadow that lives beyond the woods, the father ignores every warning and confronts the entity himself. In a desperate bargain, he secures Ellie’s return—but only by paying an unseen and devastating price. Though she is physically unharmed, Ellie comes back with her memories erased, no longer recognizing her own father or the life they shared.
The story ends with the father consumed by quiet obsession, now drawing maps just like Ellie once did, preparing to return to the forest and face Mr. Map Maker again—determined to reclaim the daughter he was forced to trade away.
